Part 1 (Introduction & Interview)

Where do you usually watch TV programs/shows?

I usually watch TV at home, mostly on my laptop or sometimes on the TV in my living room.

What’s your favourite TV program/show?

My favourite show is Friends because it’s funny and always cheers me up after a long day.

Are there any programs/shows you don’t like watching?

Yes, I don’t like reality shows because they’re often too dramatic and feel fake to me.

Do you think you will watch more TV or fewer TV programs/shows in the future?

I think I’ll watch fewer shows in the future because I’ll probably be busier with work and social life.

Part 2 (Long Turn / Cue Card)

Describe someone you know who has started a business. You should say:

Who he/she is.

– What work he/she does.

– Why he/she decided to start a business.

– And explain whether you would like to do the same kind of work as this person.

One person I know who has started a business is my cousin Sarah. She’s about 30 years old and she opened her own bakery two years ago. She’s always loved baking, even when she was a teenager, so she decided to turn her passion into a business. She makes fresh cakes, bread, and pastries every day, and she sells them both in her small shop and online. At first, it was really hard for her because she didn’t have much money and had to work long hours alone, but now her bakery is doing quite well, and she’s even hired two helpers. She told me that being her own boss makes her feel independent and proud because she can make decisions on her own. I really admire her courage because it’s not easy to run a business. Personally, I would love to do something similar one day. I like the idea of working for myself and doing something I enjoy, but I think I’d choose a different kind of business, maybe something related to education or technology, because that’s what I’m more interested in. But seeing her succeed motivates me to think about starting my own business in the future.

Part 3 (Discussion)

In your country, what kinds of jobs do young people not want to do?

In my country, young people usually don’t want to do farming or manual labour jobs because they’re tiring and don’t pay well.

Who is best at advising young people about choosing a job: teachers or parents?

I think parents are better because they know their children’s personalities and can give more personal advice.

Is money always the most important thing when choosing a job?

No, I don’t think so. Many people prefer to have job satisfaction, good colleagues, and a healthy work-life balance.

Do you agree that many people nowadays are under pressure to work longer hours and take less holiday?

Yes, I agree. Many companies expect people to work overtime, and some people feel guilty for taking their full holidays.

What is the impact on society of people having a poor work-life balance?

It can lead to stress, health problems, and less family time, which affects mental health and relationships.

Could you recommend some effective strategies for governments and employers to ensure people have a good work-life balance?

Governments could make laws to limit working hours and encourage flexible working. Employers should also promote using all vacation days and offer mental health support.
